Pen Tool Mastery in Illustrator

Master the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator — anchor points, Bezier handles, corner vs smooth points and clean curve drawing techniques.

Why the Pen tool matters

The Pen tool gives you full control over every anchor and handle in a path. Once it clicks, you can vectorize anything — logos, icons, illustration linework — with curves smoother than any other tool can produce.

Anchor points and handles

Each anchor is either a corner point (no handles, sharp angle) or a smooth point (two handles that control the curve's direction and length). Handles are tangent to the curve — longer handles mean broader, softer curves.

Drawing your first curve

Press P, click once to drop an anchor, then click-and-drag at the next position. The dragged distance becomes the outgoing handle. Repeat. Aim for the fewest anchors possible — every extra point adds wobble.

Corner-to-smooth transitions

Hold Alt and drag a handle to change a smooth point into a corner with an independent outgoing direction. This is how you draw a leaf — smooth on top, sharp at the tip.

Following a reference

Place a sketch on a locked layer at 30% opacity. Trace by setting anchors at the extremes of each curve — top, bottom, left, right of a circle, not in between. Your paths will be cleaner than any auto-trace.

Curvature Tool

Press Shift+~ for the Curvature Tool — click along a path and Illustrator interpolates smooth curves. Great for beginners, but the classic Pen still wins for tight, deliberate control.

Editing existing paths

Direct Selection (A) selects individual anchors and handles. Hold Cmd/Ctrl to temporarily switch from Pen to last selection tool — move an anchor and continue drawing without breaking flow.

Practice drill

Trace the alphabet in a single weight. The mix of curves, corners and tight inner radii in letters like B, S and R forces you through every Pen scenario in two evenings.
